WHAT IS HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE?

Homeowner’s insurance (sometimes known as "hazard insurance") protects your property. It pays for losses and damage to your property if something unexpected happens. Home insurance covers things like a fire or burglary.  When it comes to insurance -- any type of insurance -- one size does not fit all. There are many variable factors that determine the right amount of coverage for each individual homeowner.  

WHY DO YOU NEED HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE?

For many people, their home is their largest financial investment. Homeowner's insurance protects that investment. If you have a mortgage, your lender will require you to carry homeowner's insurance and provide proof of insurance.  If you don’t have insurance, or you don't provide the proper proof of insurance, your lender is allowed to buy it for you and charge you for it—. In this case, that insurance may only cover the lender - not you. When this happens, the insurance is typically more expensive than what you could buy on your own and also typically not what you need to protect your home and your family.  

WHAT DOES HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE NOT COVER?

Standard homeowners insurance does not cover damage from earthquakes or floods. But this coverage may be available to you. There are also other variables in homeowner's insurance coverage depending on your specific policy and company. In general, it is never wise to make assumptions about what is covered. It's important to know with certainty what insurance coverage you're paying for.
